Vilamoura

Vilamoura is the name given to an area rather than to any actual town. It is outstanding in that it is one of the largest single tourist complexes in Europe and covers some 2.000 hectares of land. The land is variable in its vegetation, some parts covered in pine forests whilst others open recovered marshland. At the heart of Vilamoura is the marina that is surrounded by large Hotels and Luxury holiday homes as well as a large casino, numerous restaurants, and vibrant bars. At the far corner of the marina, it is possible to charter boats for big game fishing. There are also facilities for jet skiing and parascending, as well as nearby beaches. Vilamoura has an extensive variety of activities that include touring the local caves along the coastline on tour boats. For the avid historians there is a preserved Roman Site and Museum providing an insight to the area's past. Originally a Roman fishing town, the ruins include baths in which the mariners used to bathe. A visit to Vilamoura is also a must for any golfing enthusiast. There is a wealth of beautiful and picturesque golf courses to choose.
